A VHF marine radio antenna along with how it was installed on a boat can make or break the overall performance of any marine radio. Because VHF radio waves travel in a straight line this radio frequency band is commonly referred to as “Line Of Sight”. This means the antenna should be located in the highest practical location on a boat for maximum range.
Another aspect of radio antennas to be considered is length. While shorter antennas maybe cheaper and more appealing to the eye their performance lacks when compared to a longer antenna. Although a radio antenna can not increase the power of a marine radio it can more efficiently radiate the radio frequency put into it. This is where a longer VHF marine radio antenna excels. When shopping for marine radio antennas look for a gain factor to best compare different models. This gain will be measured in db and the higher the number the better. For example many 5 foot VHF marine antennas are rated at 3db gain while an 8 foot antenna will be rated at 6db. The difference here is 2 times which is significant, especially when the cost difference is only twenty dollars.
For best performance the antenna should be mounted as high as possible on a boat in order to take full advantage of line-of-sight transmission of VHF characteristics. This will also prevent other metal objects from deforming the radiation pattern of the antenna.
Try to locate antennas as far apart from each other as possible on a boat. Locating marine radio adjacent to any other type of antenna can cause severe radiation pattern deformities both in transmission and receive modes.
A VHF antenna should be kept at least 3 feet from the marine radio. Mounting any closer can hamper the performance of the radio.
Never cut the coaxial cable that comes with a marine radio antenna. The length of cable attached to the antenna is actually tuned to the particular operating frequency of antenna and shortening the cable will impede performance along with possible damage to the marine radio.
