Because hand held marine radios are used in portable situations water will of course be present. While many manufacturers will make the claim their radio is water proof make certain to read the details. There is a big difference between a marine radio being rain proof, splash proof, or actually submersible. To be JIS4 waterproof compliant a hand held only needs to be splash resistant. For a hand held to be J1S-7 compliant it must be able to withstand being lowered into water three feet deep for 30 minutes. In addition to being JIS4 compliant some hand held marine radios will even float.
Most hand held marine radios today allow the user to switch between 1 and 5 watt transmission power. This is a very important feature that can significantly extend battery life. In the simplest terms when transmitting with 5 watts of power versus 1 watt of power almost 5 times more energy will be taken from the battery. Upper end radios will even a 1/3/5 watt capability. In cases of short range communications using the 1 watt transmission mode can really extend battery life.
Another important aspect of hand held radios is battery type and operating time. Some radios will use a custom designed rechargeable battery pack while others will utilize common batteries such as AA batteries. I personally like the AA battery option as these batteries can be conveniently found at most local stores versus having to order a special replacement battery. AA batteries can also be purchased in either alkaline or rechargeable offering the most versatility.
